Conversations / by Simmon Li

I was talking to a good friend today, and he said something to me that was really funny. "You're really good at having conversations."

"Well," I reply, "you're good at telling stories, and getting things started."

"Yea, but stories can be rehearsed."

I nodded, "I guess you're right. See, I'm good at conversations, but I'm terrible at starting them."

"See that's what I'm good at." my friend replies.

"I guess we all have our strengths and weaknesses."

You know, it's not something I recognize in myself very often, but I do have a pretty good conversational manner. When I'm not nervous anyway, I can yap and yap. It's nice to have someone listening that's passively engaging, or someone that's actively engaging. I find that often times, I don't tend to have conversations with people that I feel aren't somehow engaging with me or my words. That's why I don't think I could ever be a public speaker, I'd be bothered by the guy in the 3rd last row with headphones on.

Anyway, it's nice to know that I'm good at conversations. I consider myself lucky.
